After a first day marked by rain, the first duels of the Catalonia Open WTA 125 could finally be played yesterday at the CT Lleida, and they did so with surprises. One was played by the Barcelona player Guiomar Maristany, who got rid of the Japanese Nao Hibino, number 85 in the world ranking, in three sets (6-4, 1-6 and 6-1) thanks to a very solid game from the bottom of the clue. Prestigious victory for Maristany, who had entered the final draw with an invitation. The other surprise was the elimination of the fifth favorite, the Chinese Xiyu Wang, at the hands of the Serbian Dejana Radanovic (1-6, 6-3 and 6-4),

The other Catalan representative of the main draw, Rebeka Masarova, said goodbye in the first round after losing against the young 19-year-old Russian tennis player Erika Andreeva, also in three sets (3-6, 7-5 and 7-6) and more three hours of play. Too many unforced errors in the decisive moments took their toll on a Masarova who had the duel very much on track with a set up and 3-2 in her favor in the second. Nor did Aragonese Carlota Martínez pass, after a competitive duel against the Macedonian Lina Gjorcheska (3-6, 7-5 and 6-1). The second seed of the tournament, Katerina Siniakova, had no problems staying in contention. The Czech defeated the North American Alycia Parks with ease 6-2 and 6-4 in an hour and a half of play, while the Croatian Lucija Ciric Bagaric went to the second round after beating the French Oceane Dodin (6-4 and 6-4).
