MURCIA. The City fauna is little studied and is very important for the environment of cities. But Murcia has focused on urban birds and will carry out a census to control their number in urbanized areas. And it will do so in the southern neighborhoods, specifically in the area of the underground, since the boulevard in the southern area, around the underground and which will be a green lung, advances towards its completion.

The City Council will carry out a study on the presence of birds in the city to know the changes in their diversity depending on the greater or lesser urbanization of each area. To carry out field work, it has been estimated that it is important to focus on highly urbanized areaswhere the number of species is inevitably lower than that which lives in natural ecosystemswhere there may also be changes if there is repopulation or extinction of species.

The chosen area for the study of the GreenMe5 project It will be the environment of Conexión Sur, where the space freed up after the burial will be subject to strong revegetation and renaturalization, becoming a new urban green lung and connector of biodiversity in the city.

Furthermore, for this type of studies, ‘citizen science’ processes are of vital importance, which are monitored through official pages such as: https://ebird.org either www.inaturalist.org websites recognized by the European Commission for this type of studies.

It is planned that with the first count draws the baselinewith which comparisons can be made in the successive three studies to calculate the indicator of percentage of change in bird species required by the European Commission.

The Councilor for Open Government, Economic Promotion and Employment, Mercedes Bernabé, explains that “to protect our biodiversity, we must first know it well and birds are a thermometer of quality in cities,” to which she adds that “this area of the boulevard “The South Connection will allow the Green Path of the old railway line to connect with Murcia Río, improving the environment and biodiversity of the space.” The councilor also points out that “this action is part of the strategic project of Mayor Ballesta’s Government team Conexión Sur.”
