The archaeological excavation will resume at the end of May or beginning of June in the islamic necropolis found in the lot adjacent to the Poppy Square, in the Torrejón neighborhood, in the capital of Huelva. This is what the archaeologist indicates Jesus de Haromanager of Arqueovalia Patrimony and Cultural Management SL, a company to which the Huelva City Council has awarded, through the Urban Planning area, for 29,572.40 euros, the minor work contract consisting of archaeological excavations and installation of advertising posters in the public space in the area of ​​the Plaza de las Amapolas.

The cultural heritage and management company has two months term to carry out the work. The archaeological action project is currently being prepared to present it to the Territorial Delegation of Culture for approval. Once the Culture permit is obtained, the site will be intervened. “Certain pending points will be completed” and the adaptation, protection and conservation of what is there will be carried out. Work will continue to integrate and enhance the archaeological remains in the new public space through signage.

The archaeological remains appeared at the end of 2022 during the renovation works of Plaza Amapolas, promoted by the City Council of the capital of Huelva and framed in the Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development Strategy (Edusi), whose objective is to make this space more attractive public to enhance neighborhood coexistence. After the discovery, a preliminary diagnosis, which was followed by an archaeological excavation. The data obtained then are those that have been used “to make this work project for its enhancement.”

The archaeological remains belonging to an Islamic necropolis are dated around the 12th century. “Burials associated with the settlement of the Islamic city were found, evidence of Islamic burials,” notes the archaeologist. He will intervene in the already excavated area, for the protection and conservation of what has already been found, as well as in those points that were pending, thus continuing with the work started more than a year ago, for a complete investigation and documentation of the site. The archaeological action will be carried out simultaneously with the urbanization works of the public space, which will be undertaken by Terracivil.

It was carried out a redefinition of the urbanization project of the site, a new plaza with a designed to “integrate the remains found”, so that “the visitor knows what space they are passing through” through explanatory and informative panels. An urban reinterpretation of the space has been made for this purpose.
