The filmmaker Sonia Méndez (Vigo, 1980) and her team are in the midst of promoting “As Neves”, his latest feature film that will hit theaters on the 10th. “It is a psychological drama, the anguish of the kids over the disappearance of a classmate; Despite having thriller overtones, it is driven more by emotion,” says the director, who presents a universal story. Set in a fictional town of A Fonsagrada and filmed in Galician, it could happen anywhere in the world.

Produced, starring, written and directed by Galicians, it is an example of local talent. “With the exception of David Rodríguez, who participated in ‘ is life’, for the rest of the boys it has been their first approach to the world of cinema.” Thus, Méndez emphasizes the exhaustiveness of the casting.

The entire team moved to the luguese mountain in search of snow between December and January. “For Christmas we returned home, but I spent Three Kings Day there, it was a very hard and at the same time happy filming; When the first snowfalls arrived we could hardly even move, that feeling is noticeable in the atmosphere of the film,” says the director, who experienced during this production what she herself called “little miracles of life.”

The first surprise came with the soundtrack. Méndez is a declared fan of Andy Bell , by the British band Ride, before Oasis. “The theme that plays in the credits inspired part of this film for me; Without further ado, one day before starting filming I sent an email to Bell at an address that I found somewhere and to my amazement, he answered me, showed interest and what was going to be a collaboration became the entire soundtrack of The film even came to Galicia, we have the making that we are also going to release.” For the director, each theme fits perfectly with the plot. Her relationship with the British musician continues and the woman from Vigo assures that she would love to have future collaborations: “She can’t come to the premiere because it coincides with her tour of the States, but she is very aware of the entire process.”

Sonia Méndez has been in the world of celluloid for years as an actress and director, so she is clear about the outlook for the sector: “It is difficult to make films anywhere in the world, getting a film into theaters is a miracle, it requires a lot of work and effort”. He recognizes that there is a lot of talk about Galician cinema. “Projects like Jaione’s with ‘O Corno’ and Gago’s with ‘Matria’ made people interested in seeing what is being done here, but it is still very difficult to get things done and many times it is not achieved.” An example of this interest is the participation of Méndez herself and Álvaro Gago in the workshops that the Film Academy organized in Vigo. “It was a very positive experience, it is easier to analyze the work of others than your own.”

Always with new ideas in mind and after closing the “Carballo Interplay”, The filmmaker from Vigo now focuses on enjoying the weeks before “As Neves” hits theaters. She does so, endorsed by the public and critics after its premiere in the Malaga festival.
