After years of warning of political degeneration, the Andalusian College of Journalists has written an open letter that is not wasted

“If you want to know who Juanillo is, give him a carguillo,” the saying goes. And I add more, that I know well about it if only because of my name. You see: the first thing Juanillo will do with that little guy is graduate in Journalism. A little later, if no one prevents him, he will surely feel like he has a degree in Law, Political Science and Philosophy and Letters, all at the same time, although by then he will have long since fallen into bullshit.

I say this in response to the invitation to reflection that President Sánchez has made to society, in which much focus has been placed on the role of some supposed media and professionals. If it is allowed, I want to contribute my grain of sand to the debate. Or better not. I leave it to the magnificent and very polite open letter from the College of Journalists of Andalusia. I haven’t read anything better in years. It is at https://periodistasandalucia.es/carta-al-presidente-del-gobierno/ «We want to convey our deep and profound concern about the unfortunate and unworthy situation that journalism is going through in our country and the null or scarce support that corporations of public law like ours receive from those who exercise legislative power and have the competence and capacity to alleviate this situation,” begins the letter that, I insist, is not wasted.

It is surprising that it seems that in these years no one has read the many real journalists or listened to the press associations that warned of a degeneration in forms and even the loss of the slightest education and decency in areas not only political, with the consequent disaffection of the citizen with democracy. I suppose they would all be very involved in the mud: some trying not to get splashed, others trying to get out, the third happy to wallow in it…

They attribute to Alexis de Tocqueville the phrase “the problems of democracy are solved with more democracy.” Ole. Well, for such an essential part of democracy as free, rigorous and serious journalism, and not only in politics but in all types of information, “the problems of professionalism in journalism are resolved with more professionalism.” And not giving more loads to juanillos.
