O Berbés invoiced throughout last year, during the entire fiscal year of 2023, close to 262 million euros for the marketing of fish, both fresh, unloaded from trucks or ships, and frozen, from deep-sea vessels that operate in the Atlantic environment. It is the highest figure reached, despite the total number of tons moved falling, because on this occasion the management of the Port Authority (APV) decided to also include the frozen fish products sold in O Berbés (the frozen fish that enters is counted separately). by Guixar in merchant ships and containers, some 600,000 more tons), which until now did not appear in the statistics. In total, the volume of the fresh produce reached 32,153 tons, with an average value of 4.4 euros per kilo, totaling 142.5 million euros. The frozen fish – captured and unloaded directly by the fishing vessel – totaled 34,707 tons, at three euros, for a total of 104.5 million. And also, another 3,786 tons of frozen mollusks, at 3.9 euros, with almost 15 million. In total they amounted to 70,647 tons, a lower mark than in previous years, although the average price has been growing. In 2024, the trend remains the same or even more negative, with a 7 percent drop in the accumulated figure due mainly to the EU vetoes in 87 Atlantic fishing zones and other specific causes, such as bad weather, Easter or difficulty with the Irish ferry with fish. By species, there is nothing new: the main ones continue to be black monkfish (5,800 tons), roosterfish (rapante, 4,900), sardines (3,358), white monkfish (2,600) and hake, which reached 1,809 tons. The horse mackerel was in sixth position in the ranking of species landed with 1,719 tons.

On the other hand, O Berbés is at its lowest level of employment, with 3,668 people registered in various activities, compared to more than 4,000 in the previous year and 4,400 in 2014. Among the causes would be the lack of relief in the area of personnel dedicated to unloading, sales, preparation and export and transportation in the fishing port, as well as the grouping of buyers operating, which reduces the total number. In addition, the APV is updating its census.

360 ships

Finally, and with respect to the fleet, it is currently made up of 360 fishing vessels that operate based in Vigo, of them lMost inshore, 314, compared to only 46 high (Gran Sol vessels and other fishing grounds). There are 15 less than the previous year, but many more than ten years ago, when there were 258, although the increase occurred due to the shallows, since the ships with the greatest tonnage, of height, were then 118. The scrapping of dozens of ships working in the Atlantic and Gran Sol has led to a very significant decrease in the total number of operational fishing vessels. The high-altitude freezers, like those that operate in the Malvinas and have just finished the first campaign of the year, mostly have the flag of the British Isles. This year, they exceeded 40,000 tons of loligo squid.
