The Arteixo of a thousand languagesLOC

“We work so that they know each other and recognize languages as a wealth, and not as a problem. One has to build bridges for cohesion and inclusion,” claims the professor of the of Santiago de Compostela (USC), Gabriela Prego. Secondary School Students Manuel Murguía Institute of Arteixo They participate this Thursday in the Trocando Linguas Olympiad of the Compostela university, a project in which they investigate and disseminate about the linguistic situation of the immediate environment, in the family and the municipality. Although the Arteixán center has been participating in this type of projects for more than ten years, on this occasion they will share experiences with colleagues from Ames and Burellawho have worked in their respective locations.

In the 2023 edition, there were 55 languages detected in the municipality, coming from five continents. “This year we focused on how the situation of such diverse languages that Arteixo has brings communicative conflicts”explains Prego, in charge of working with the students. Usually, schoolchildren had to collect the languages spoken by their relatives. This time, they went one step further and They went out into the streets to ask the neighbors. In these surveys they had the help, side by side, of old people with a migrant background. “They collaborated Galicians who emigrated to or Germanyand people from those countries who married natives and came to live here,” says the organizer of the linguistic project.

The between young people who may belong to foreign communities with elders who were in the same situation is a situation with which to enrich the education of children. At the same time, native students have had the opportunity to learn about Galicia’s roots in emigration. “The next step is take on that diversity like something delicious,” the teacher points out.

This is another edition of a training program that has been running at Manuel Murguía since 2010. In all this time they have been able to contemplate the nationalities present in the municipality. “In the early years, the most important foreign nationality was the Moroccan. In the latter, there are more Venezuelans”, specifies Gabriela Prego, citing reports collected in 2019 among all compulsory education centers in Arteixo. In addition to the wealth of languages of the Muslim community rooted in the municipality, the neighbors originally from Latin also contribute native languages such as Quechua. In this framework, the teacher says, the Galician must also find and strengthen his position from educational planning.
