The Popular Party of Vigo has urged Abel Caballero to fulfill the electoral promise he made in May 2023 to encourage consumption in local commerce.

As they point out in a statement, “shortly before the appointment with the polls, the socialist candidate announced that, if elected mayor, he would promote a campaign for purchase checks in the city’s stores.” However, the spokesman for the municipal group of the PP of Vigo, Miguel Martín, clarifies that “As almost always, unfortunately Caballero did not go beyond the grandiose headline in the press, in which he only sold us smoke”says.

From the Popular Party they bet on this type of measures to “revitalize” consumption in businesses in the sector that have their registered office in Vigo. According to them, these are initiatives “highly valued, as recognized by businessmen and self-employed workers after the experiences promoted by the Xunta de Galicia.”

And they value here the implementation of the Bono Comercio, which published this Monday the first official data of this new campaign, which has exceeded 300,000 downloads in its first days. As they point out, only in the olive city, 537 establishments have joined this program. “Proof of its success and effectiveness since it helps sell more, which is ultimately what it is about,” Martín pointed out.

The PP of Vigo has thus demanded from Abel Caballero a decided impulse for local commerce and “not to put it in profile againlike when he denied direct aid to the city’s stores during the health crisis,” they say.

“It should be remembered that The Council of Vigo was the only one of the large Galician cities that did not grant any type of direct aid to small and medium-sized businesses during the Covid pandemic, unlike what the rest of the municipalities and administrations did, which did get involved,” said the popular spokesperson for the Olívic City Council.

“This is the reality that the city’s businesses deal with,” they point out from the PP that, they continue “You see how Caballero continues not to keep his word” in this matter and other very “vaunted” ones. “On the one hand, looking for excuses not to create the website, referring now, three years after its announcement, to alleged legal doubts, which seems like a sovereign joke to the merchants of this city. And, on the other hand, keeping the purchase checks promised in the electoral campaign in the drawer of oblivion and who were never heard from again. All this sounds like a new deception to a very punished sector in recent years,” adds the PP councilor.

Finally, Miguel Martín has demanded that convene the Local Board of Commerce, that was born in 2010 with the idea of reaching a consensus on municipal policies to support and promote Vigo commerce through the different associations that represent it, but which have not met for more than a decade. “One more example that Caballero acts without listening to and without taking into account the needs and requests of the sector,” he concluded.
