Zafra will be part of the I Chess Circuit of the Badajoz Provincial Council

The Provincial Council of Badajoz, through the Area of ​​Culture, Youth and , and in collaboration with the Extremadura Chess Federation, has created the I Chess Circuit that will be held in six locations in the province: Guareña, Casas de Don Pedro, Villafranca of Los Barros, Don Benito, Mérida and Zafra. And it will be precisely in Zafra where this circuit will end on December 1.

The initiative was presented this Tuesday, April 30, at the headquarters of the provincial institution. Manuel Candalija, director of the Culture, Sports and Youth Area, explained that the Badajoz Provincial Chess Circuit seeks to fulfill three objectives: Promote chess, facilitate the mobility of players, and give visibility to the Extremeña Chess Federation and the clubs. He has also announced that the circuit will enter the Sports Dynamization Plan once it is fully approved.

For his part, the president of the Extremadura Chess Federation, Pedro Guerrero, has indicated that with this format a further step is taken to connect all the events that are being held: «It is focused on popular chess and participation is sought. since it allows the mobility of the participants,” Guerrero said.

The mayor of Zafra, Juan Carlos Fernández, was also present at the presentation, and recalled that Ruy López de Segura, a Segedano born around the year 1530, is considered the first world chess champion. «With this discipline we promote a noble sport and put Zafra on the map; “We have a vocation to be the chess capital in Extremadura and our motto is ‘Zafra City of Sports’,” said the mayor.
