Belmopan Man Brutally Chopped to Death, Police Pursue Suspect – Love FM Belize News & Power


A 52-year-old man was chopped to death this morning in the City of Belmopan. The victim, Pedro Hernandez, was at home in the Maya Mopan area when death came calling his name. Police say Hernandez was called out by a man, who chopped him several times before fleeing the scene. Hernandez suffered several chop wounds to his body and was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police are yet to ascertain a motive behind the callous murder, but Assistant Commissioner of Police, Hilberto Romero, says they have identified one suspect.

ACP Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding, Eastern Division: “Police visited a house at the Maya Mopan area in Belmopan. Upon their arrival they saw a male person identified as Pedro Hernandez with chop wounds. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Information is that Pedro Hernandez was at his house when he was called out by a male person and as soon as he came out he was chopped by this person. “We are seeking on suspect in regards to this report.”

Our newsroom also spoke to a resident of the area, who stated that Hernandez and his assailant exchanged a few words before Hernandez was brutally attacked.

Belmopan Resident:A person was already on the roadside already on his bike and he was standing there long and then a little while I saw the old man come down, Pedro Hernandez, he came and they weren’t talking long. I just saw the person that was sitting on his bike just grabbed his machete and started chasing him and I saw Don Pedro Hernandez run and he started chopping the old man there and then Pedro Hernandez came running into our yard and then he ran and he tripped and right there the person started to finish chopping him up.”

Hernandez resided in the area for several years.
