South Dakota and Minnesota men identified as victims in fatal highway accident – Mitchell Republic

EDGEMONT, South Dakota — Two victims of a fatal crash were identified by authorities in South Dakota on Saturday. Both men died after the vehicle they were reportedly rolled several times.

According to a news release from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the driver of the 2001 Ford F250 was identified as S. Gembala, 55, of Edgemont, South Dakota. 64-year-old Roy Joseph Nielson of Willmar, Minnesota, was the passenger in the vehicle.

Gembala and Nielson each suffered fatal injuries. Neither was wearing a seatbelt, according to the news release.

The double fatality was reported Wednesday, April 24, at 7:54 am near mile marker 25 of South Dakota Highway 471, approximately three miles south of Edgemont, South Dakota.

According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, preliminary crash information showed that Gembala was driving himself and Nielson southbound on South Dakota Highway 471 when the vehicle ran off the roadway and into the southbound lane.

According to the release, the vehicle then overcorrected once back in the southbound lane and went off the roadway again, rolling down an embankment several times.

The crash remains under investigation, according to the news release.
