The Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has opened an investigation into the death of Christian Emile, who died after an encounter with NYPD officers in Brooklyn on May 12, 2024.

According to OSI, at 1:18 am, NYPD officers encountered Emile, armed with a gun, at 5211 Church Ave. Despite commands to drop the weapon, Emile ran, prompting officers to discharge their firearms, striking him. Emile was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, and a firearm was recovered at the scene.

Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI assesses all incidents where a police or peace officer may have caused a civilian’s death. If an officer’s actions are found to be a potential cause, OSI conducts a full investigation.
